Jump start your school year with three days of in-depth, hands-on work with two remarkable Learning Through the Arts artists. This three day institute promises time to connect with core curriculum, media and the fine arts, and reflect on how you can adapt projects for work in your classroom and grade level. Two days will be spent with film maker James Reckseidler investigating video projects with connections to core curriculum. Eveline Koljin's one day print making workshop will focus on science and math connections.

Facilitators
James Reckseidler is a writer/director based in Calgary, Alberta, whose short films have played both nationally and internationally. Along with his LTTA Media work, James is currently writing two feature length screenplays and working on several short films projects.

End off your summer learning the techniques of new media and video-making. Develop exciting ways to engage your students and address curricular expectations in media arts and media literacy. Participants will create storyboards, act, direct, film, edit and add music during this one-of-a-kind teacher institute. Work collaboratively with like-minded education professionals as you trade off the roles of director, actor, camerman and editor. At the end of the institute you will leave with your created short video, and a host of new ideas for bringing meaningful media literacy instruction into your classroom.

As a freelance designer, and in her 8th year with LTTA, Lynne Mulvihill will guide participants through this exciting topic. Lynne brings her design expertise into the classroom, showing how students can create realistic models to represent curricular concepts and vocabulary. Through this medium, she encourages students to use their creativity and imagination to design various projects through problem solving. From 3D satellite image maps of weather patterns to designing everyday products such as crackers, Lynne uses her skills as a designer to fuse 2D and 3D concepts and bring the curriculum into a whole new dimension.

City Design: We will use the design process to create a city of 3D skyscrapers using concepts in math from grade 1-6. You will take home a model city of your own along with the confidence to recreate the project with your class.

Be prepared to use your creative juices and see your own mathematical creation grow from the ground up!!

Furniture design: The design of everyday objects creates an opportunity for the exploration of math in a variety of ways. Incorporating measurement, 2D and 3D shapes, angles and triangles and more, this session will help to develop the mathematical vocabulary of your students while designing and constructing unique designs for furniture and accessories.

Participants will have the opportunity to make a faux metallic book, stick book, pop-up book, and other curriculum-based books. Different paper folding and binding techniques will also be demonstrated. This fun, hands-on workshop is geared to both primary and junior levels.

Wednesday, May 5, 2010, Math Patterning and Fractions through Movement
Put a new twist on math! Join LTTA mentor dance artist Louise Paquette as she shares activities from her most popular LTTA math lessons. Learn ways to introduce and explore fractions through movement and dance. Experience for yourself how to choreograph dances based on math patterning concepts. Discover fun and interesting ways to merge math and dance curriculum. Youll leave this workshop with great movement ideas that students love, and increased confidence in dance assessment.

Wednesday, May 12, 2010, Building Literacy through Puppetry
Join LTTA's mentor drama artist and puppeteer Matthew Romain in exploring the magic of puppetry! In this workshop participants will learn to make two types of puppets and learn to use them effectively in a puppet theatre. Back in the classroom you'll have your students finishing puppets like these in a double period. In this safe approach to oral communication you will learn strategies for bringing a script to life through vocal characterization. Any curriculum becomes content for this activity, and you'll find the puppets may be used again and again to enliven any subject area, and as a check for understanding.
